Atari, SEGA, Nintendo, and Sony Play Station, are just a few of the many video game systems that have been popular over the last few decades. The first home video game system was available in 1972.

The main games featured were a tennis game and a light gun game. There were no new systems available until 1976, when Fairchild Camera and Instruments released their system simply called the Video Entertainment System. In 1977, Atari starting placing coin operated arcade games inside restaurants. These arcade games were such a success, that Atari decided to create their own home video game system, which used cartridges, called the Atari 2600.

Things remained fairly quiet in the video game industry until around 1985, when Nintendo created the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System). In 1989, video games became portable. In 1995, Sony joined with Phillips, to create the first home video game system that would use CDs instead of cartridges for their online multiplayer games. Nintendo and SEGA also created similar systems, but in the end Sony Play station came out on top.

Playing video games at home began in 1977 when the company, Atari, released their video game system, ‘VCS’ (later known as Atari 2600) for a princely sum of $249. In the same year, Nintendo released their console, TV Game 6, to rival the Atari 2600.

In 1980, many classic arcade games were made. Video games such as Atari’s ‘Asteroids’ and Namco’s ‘Pacman’ which can now be easily played in handheld consoles such as the Nintendo DS.

By 1994, many sagas of Video Game history came and went. In that year, Sony released the ‘Playstation’ – a 32-bit CD-based video game console, Sega released the ‘Saturn’ and Nintendo released the ‘Nintendo 64′ which was the last video game console that used cartridge media.

Nintendo led the handheld console with the release of Gameboy Advance which could play Gameboy and Gameboy Color cartridges.
